Bibi was jailed in 2009 and sentenced to death in 2010 for blasphemy and speaking against the prophet Muhammad during an argument with Muslim women. Bibi’s blasphemy accusations were never verified and an appeal hearing was postponed at least five times.
She is now so weak in prison that she can barely walk, according to a previous report.
President of the British Pakistani Christian Association Wilson Chowdhry said, "...it has become clear that (Bibi’s) treatment was, in effect, a slow death sentence by neglect and worse, all for allegedly committing a crime that should not exist — blasphemy.”
Chowdhry said that attempts are now being made in parts of the country to reform Pakistan’s blasphemy laws that persecute religious minorities.
"The proposed changes will ostensibly make it more difficult for blasphemy charges to be laid, focusing on proving that any blasphemy was intentional…” he said.
Even if the law is reformed, Chowdhry said it would likely have little effect, as police in Pakistan often bow down to mob pressure who support blasphemy laws.
