A bill that would defund Planned Parenthood for at least a year has been sent to President Obama.
The House passed the bill late Wednesday, according to The Christian Post.
Under the proposed bill, abortion providers are “prohibited entities” and banned from receiving funding. Abortions due to rape, incest or that pose life threatening circumstances are exempt.
The bill also reverses the mandate that all Americans must buy healthcare or be penalized, and strikes down the law that certain businesses must offer health insurance to employees.
This is the first time that Congress has sent a bill that threatens to repeal parts of the Affordable Care Act.
“For five years, Senate Democrats have blocked our efforts to repeal Obamacare,” Speaker Paul Ryan said in a statement. “That ends today. With this vote, we are keeping a promise and putting a bill that repeals Obamacare and defunds Planned Parenthood on the president’s desk.”
Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has not issued a statement.
It’s expected that Obama will veto the changes to his Affordable Health Care Act. If so, Congress will need a two-thirds majority vote in both chambers to override the veto.
"The point of healthcare is to preserve and protect life. That's why this bill stops taxpayer funding for abortion providers," said Rep. Vicky Hartzler, R-Mo.
"This bill places a moratorium on taxpayer funding to abortion providers and redirects that money to community health centers. These health centers serve eight times more women patients than Planned Parenthood, and they provide much more comprehensive care."
