A woman in China has been ordered to go through with a late-term abortion or lose her job.

Qin Yi, a teacher, obtained permission to have a second child from her hometown of Huangshan City in Anhui province. However, Qin and her husband live in Guizhou, which enforces China’s one-child policy.

The teacher has been told that she will lost her job is she does not terminate her pregnancy by the end of this month; Qin is five months pregnant.

Christian Today reports China’s one-child policy originated in 1978 and has been under criticism for years. Human rights activists say the law has caused a national “gendercide,” as most families want a male child. This had led the abortions of innumerable babies, and an enormous gender gap in the country.

Women’s Rights Without Frontiers president Reggie Littlejohn said, "Continuing the one-child policy makes no demographic sense. China's population problem is not that it has too many people, but too few young people and too few women. Limiting births can no longer justify the policy.”
