In his 21st season in the Giants baseball operations department, Bobby Evans maintains his most important task is to honor Christ, according to the Christian News Journal.

Evans participated in the decision to bench San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera in 2012 for using a banned performance-enhancing substance. Cabrera received a 50 game suspension after testing positive for high levels of testosterone.

While many fans and sports commentators expected Evans to reinstate Melky in time for the 2012 World Series, Evans kept his outfielder on the bench. The San Francisco Giants won the championship that year.

“You want your life to point people to Christ,” Evans said. “It starts for me with my own relationship with Christ. That’s going to direct and dictate what influence I have for Christ in my family, in my marriage and in the workplace.”

Evans emphasized the need to make family a priority and making sure his actions match his faith in Christ.

“Even with home games, you’re at the ballpark til 11 o’clock at night after a night game,” he said. “And so whenever possible, I try to have my family at the ballpark. I make sure that if we have a night game, I’m up to take them to school the next day. I coach little league teams and just make sure there’s no priority that gets ahead of them.”
