Donald Trump won the Indiana primary election in a landslide victory, causing Ted Cruz to drop out of the presidential race. CNN reports Cruz previously announced he would stay in the race until June 7; a contested convention seemed imminent. However, the poor performance in Indiana ended Cruz’s campaign.

Cruz had named Carly Fiorina as his vice president, and formed an alliance with John Kasich to gain momentum in his campaign. The plans ultimately failed.

In his concession speech Cruz said, "We left it all on the field in Indiana. We gave it everything we've got but the voters chose another path. So with a heavy heart but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign."

The Republican field is now narrowed to two candidates: Trump and Kasich, who mathematically cannot win enough delegates to secure the nomination.

The number of delegates needed for the Republican nomination is 1,237. Trump currently has 1,047 delegates. Kasich secured 153 delegates and there are only 520 remaining.

On the democratic side, Bernie Sanders triumphed over Hillary Clinton with a narrow victory of 52.5 percent of the vote. Sanders vowed to continue the “uphill fight” against Clinton, though he needs more delegates to win than are remaining.
