Former NFL quarterback and sports broadcaster Tim Tebow has signed a minor league deal with professional baseball team the New York Mets.

Tebow had been pursuing a career in baseball since this spring. According to ABC News, the former football player and popular Christian athlete practiced his hitting and fielding skills over the summer to prepare for a tryout in front of all 30 major league baseball teams which occurred at the end of August.

Scouts from all the teams reportedly watched as Tebow showcased his baseball skills, hitting against former MLB pitchers David Aardsma and Chad Smith.

The Colorado Rockies and the Atlanta Braves reportedly expressed interest in signing him, but it was the Mets that locked him into a minor league contract.

Tebow had played baseball in high school and was, in fact, one of the key players on his Nease High School team when the team made it to the final four in the Florida state championships. Tebow also achieved a batting average of .495 that year.

Jimmy Sexton, one of Tebow’s football agents, stated, “Obviously we support Tim in his pursuit of a baseball career, as we have in all his ventures.”
