Ohio Passes Bill Banning Abortions after 6 Weeks

Lawmakers in Ohio have passed a bill, that, if signed by the state’s governor, John Kasich, would ban most abortions after six weeks.

The NBC-affiliated station WCMH-TV Columbus reported that the “Heartbeat Bill,” as it is known, would be one of the nation’s strictest abortion laws.

Currently, after Roe v. Wade was passed in 1973, legalizing abortion, most states have resorted to allowing abortion up to the point of fetus viability--when a fetus is able to stay alive outside the womb.

If signed into law, the Heartbeat Bill will perhaps set a new precedent regarding abortion restrictions.

Pro-life advocates are hoping that, with a new president who has said he is pro-life and will appoint pro-life justices to the Supreme Court, the measure will not be overturned on the federal level.

Gov. Kasich, who was himself a 2016 Republican presidential candidate, is pro-life, but has voiced hesitancy in the past regarding whether such a ban on abortion would be considered constitutional.

The new bill not only prohibits most abortions after six weeks, but would make no exceptions for rape or incest, but only if the mother’s life was endangered.

While abortion advocates have condemned the bill, pro-lifers have welcomed it.

“I think we have a brand new day here in America and we’re going to see a brand new Supreme Court with pro-life justices,” stated Janet Porter, president of Faith2Action. “By the time this law gets to the Supreme Court, I’m confident it will be upheld.”
