Wiser than We Are

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” —Isaiah 55:9

There was a time in my life when Ilived apart from Christ. I had the so-called fun this world has to offer. In fact, I discovered that it wasn’t fun at all. And after I gave my life to Christ, I discovered there was fulfillment, purpose, and meaning in following Him. I also came to realize an important truth: God is wiser than we are.

I remember when I took my granddaughter, Stella, to a yogurt store, and she was learning to use a napkin. She would take a bite of yogurt and then take the napkin and wipe her mouth. It was very cute. As she ran along on the sidewalk in front of the yogurt store, she noticed a napkin on the ground. So Stella grabbed the napkin off the filthy ground and brought it up to wipe her little mouth. I said, “Stella, no!”

She looked at me with confusion, and so I repeated, “No, no. It’s dirty. Don’t do that.” I had to take the napkin away from her. She didn’t like that so much, because in her mind, her mouth needed to be wiped, and any napkin would do. But her grandfather, who knows a little bit more, said, “Oh, no. That is unsanitary. That is not good.”

In the same way, as we are running through life and want to do certain things, God may say, “No, don’t do that.”

We may not like it at first. We may wonder what God is doing. But God is wiser than we are. He says, “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:9).

So if God tells us not to do something, He does so for good reason.

Summary sentence: Is there something God may be saying to you, “No, don’t do that?”
