An American Army veteran recently made headlines for travelling to Iraq to fight ISIS alongside the Christian militia, Dwekh Nawsha. The American veteran, known only by his first name, Brett, calls himself a “Soldier of Christ,” answering Jesus’ call to protect the defenseless.

In an interview with ABC News, Brett said "People ask me, 'Why you?' I come back and I say, 'Why not? Why just me? Where's everyone else at?'"

He continued, "Jesus says, you know, 'What you do unto the least of them, you do unto me.' I take that very seriously."

The Christian Post reports that religious leaders have said that the crimes committed by ISIS should unite Christians around the world.

Pope Francis previously said, "The blood of our Christian brothers and sisters is a testimony which cries out to be heard. It makes no difference whether they be Catholics, Orthodox, Copts or Protestants. They are Christians! Their blood is one and the same. Their blood confesses Christ.”

At the same time, Canon Andrew White, the “Vicar of Baghdad,” has urged Christians to refrain from joining Dwekh Nawsha, saying that the group was “hopeless” against ISIS.

"Christians are no good at being soldiers. If going to join the new militia makes them feel good, great. But it will achieve absolutely nothing. We are dealing with an evil, evil regime as we saw in Libya with the beheadings of the Coptic Christians. There is very little that any Iraqi Christian or British Christian can do to help. The best thing they can do is stay at home," White said.
