Republican Congressman Vance McAllister asked God and his wife for forgiveness Monday after a surveillance video showing the congressman in a passionate moment with another woman has gone public.
According to The Ouachita Citizen, the video was recorded on December 23, 2013 and depicts McAllister kissing and embracing Melissa Anne Hixon Peacock in his congressional office. Peacock is employed as the congressman’s scheduler.
McAllister is a Christian and father of five representing the 5th district of Louisiana. The congressman publicly declared his faith during his campaign for office in fall 2013 reports the Christian Post.
McAllister made a public statement of apology after the video was exposed.
"There's no doubt I've fallen short and I'm asking for forgiveness. I'm asking for forgiveness from God, my wife, my kids, my staff, and my constituents who elected me to serve. Trust is something I know has to be earned whether you're a husband, a father, or a congressman. I promise to do everything I can to earn back the trust of everyone I've disappointed,” he said.
McAllister has expressed a desire for privacy for his children as the family copes with the affair.
Many citizens have taken to McAllister’s facebook page with remarks of disapproval; some ask for resignation.
