The first runners of the 2014 Boston Marathon set off at 8:50 a.m. on Monday. The race attracted 36,000 runners from 80 countries, 9,000 more than 2013.

The marathon was different than previous years; a moment of silence was observed at 8:45 a.m. in remembrance of the four people who passed and in honor of the 206 people who sustained injuries in the Boston Marathon bombing of 2013.

Security was amped up for the event for protection of the runners and spectators. 3,500 police officers were in attendance at the event, 100 security cameras were in use and bomb-sniffing dogs were dispersed among the crowd reported CNN. Spectators were not permitted strollers or opaque bags.

Still, the event seemed to have record-breaking numbers of crowds cheering on the runners.

The biggest change is the overall spirit of the marathon in 2014. According to The New York Times, the race has transformed into an event with worldwide support and an attitude of defiance and strength in the face of trials. “Boston Strong” resounds with the running community not only in Boston, but in the nation, and greater world as well.
