Tell Your Story

And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.

–1 John 5:11

I have heard people talk about their life and all the horrible things they used to do before they became Christians.  And as they are describing this, it almost seems as though they had more fun before they were Christians than they are having now.  As they are talking, I’m thinking, “Something is not right here.”

When you share your testimony, never glorify or exaggerate the past.  You can essentially let people know that you weren’t always the way you are.  You can say, “I wasn’t always this way.  There was a moment when Christ came into my life.  Here is what Jesus did for me.”  You can show people what has taken place in your life.  It becomes a great bridge as you are sharing the gospel.

Often when I share my testimony, I will say things like, “This is the way I used to view Christians,” and then I will describe how I viewed them, which was not in a very favorable light.  The person I’m speaking with is usually nodding, probably because that is how they are viewing me at the moment.  I will say, “And this is the way that I used to think. . . . But here is what happened to me.  Here is what Christ has done for me.”

You see, for the person who was among the lowest of the low or the person who has been living a relatively moral life, the effect is still the same.  We were all sinners separated from God and going to hell.  But Christ died for us.  We put our faith in Him.  And we were forgiven.

People need to hear your testimony.  Because everyone has a story to tell.
