I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith. 2 TIMOTHY 4:7
Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, experienced the ultimate graduation, to heaven, on July 19, 2003. And other than my parents, no person has had a greater influence on my life. My mind fails trying to lay a yardstick beside the many, many ways he shaped and influenced me.
Shortly before his homecoming, I wrote him a personal letter—a very inadequate attempt at expressing how much he meant to me. Among other things, I thanked him for the following:
•Modeling what it looks like to be a bond slave of Christ
•Constantly reminding me that our God is not small
•Having a great sense of humor and for being real
•Never thinking about quitting—never!
•Allowing me the freedom to disagree
•Making tough decisions
•Telling me there is no amount of money that God won't give the man who doesn't allow it to stick to his fingers
•Allowing God to use him to build a platform that so many could follow, using it to reach nations for God's glory
•Being committed to his wife, Vonette, for more than 53 years—for running the race and finishing well
Pulmonary fibrosis kept him in constant pain during his final years. Yet amazingly, these years were some of his most productive. "It's a win-win situation for me," he said. "If I live, I go on serving Him. If I die, I'm in heaven with Him."
I am a better man for having known and worked for Bill Bright for more than 30 years. How we need more friends and mentors with that kind of faith and life!
Of these nine statements of Christian character, which one or two are you most eager to exemplify?
Pray that God would grow His nature and character in you so that the first thing people see in you is your faithfulness—and your faithful Lord.
