The Journey with Ron Moore

Ziklag: Double Life | Ephesians 4:15 | Devotional

Ephesians 4:15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. Oh, be careful little mouth what you say. Oh, be careful little mouth what you say. For the Father up above is looking down in love. So, be careful little mouth what you say.

Remember that old children’s song? (It had verses about several body parts, and was usually sung by a bunch of three-year-olds at the VBS closing program, with some little prima donna drowning out everyone while her parents gleefully captured every note on a movie camera…but that’s not important right now). Early on, we are told to watch our words, to tell the truth, “Thou shalt not lie”… but we spend our life trying to apply that instruction.

From the little white lie, to cheating on a test, to fudging on a report, to self-protection, to rationalization, we learn that telling the truth is not as easy as singing a children’s song. Little lies keep us out of trouble and get someone else into trouble. “You can’t handle the truth” our heart rationalizes (in its best Jack Nicholson voice), so we use a half-truth to somehow soften the message.

But Scripture does not distinguish between a half-truth and a lie. Growth in Christ comes when we cut the rationalizations and self-protection, and speak the truth in love. Amazing, isn’t it…we learned this simple truth as a child…but we’re still working on the consistent application as adults.

Father, please help us to speak the truth in love in all situations. Help us to be honest with others, ourselves, and with you. In Jesus name. Amen.
