There's An App For That: How Do I Get to Know God? | 1 Kings 19:11-12

1 Kings 19:11-12
The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

Recently I was in New York City, and checked an item off my “Bucket List” by going for a run in Central Park. Afterward, I got a Starbucks and went up on the grandstands at the north end of Times Square. I thought, “This will be a great place to cool down and pray.” Are you kidding? There are so many things going on at Times Square, even early in the morning, that I was constantly distracted. But then again, sensory overload is not the only thing that distracts me.

Distractions, whatever they are, can cause us to miss the voice of God. In today’s passage, God did not speak to Elijah in a powerful wind, earthquake, or fire. Those are things that get your attention! God spoke in a “gentle whisper.”

To hear God’s voice, we need to get away from loud life interruptions. We need to shield ourselves from the things that interfere with our ability to listen. Certainly God can speak as piercingly as he wants. But often he speaks in more soothing tones. If you want to hear from God, you need to be in a place where you can hear his gentle whisper.

Father, we are busy people living in a loud world. But help us to take the time to walk quiet paths and listen for your voice. Give us a sensitive ear to hear your quiet whisper. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
