The Higher Rock | Psalm 61:1-3

Psalm 61:1-3
For the director of music. With stringed instruments. Of David.
Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.

David was feeling weak and inadequate. Something was going on in his life that caused him to cry out to God. He needed God to hear and answer his prayer. His soul was weary. His strength was giving out. He needed God to lead him to a high rock, a safe stronghold. Now, hereís the question: How did David know that God was capable of doing that? He knew because of Godís faithful work in the past.

Davidís prayer for God to work in the present was based on his experience of Godís work in the past. David said, ìFor you have been my refuge.î God had demonstrated his protection. God had been ìa strong tower against the foe.î God had delivered David before. He knew that God could do it again.

Trusting God is not based on an unwarranted hope or an unproven trust. The courage to move forward with God today is based on the fact that he was with us yesterday. The strength to trust God today comes from the experience of his demonstrated trustworthiness yesterday. We can say, ìGod you have beenî therefore, ìyou will always be.î

Father, right now I review the ways you have been faithful to me in the past (make a list of Godís past faithfulness in your life). Based on what you have done in the past I am crying out for your help today. I am confident that you will come to my aid and lead me to the rock that is higher than I. In Jesusí name. Amen.
