How to Delight "Daintily" in God

"Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart." (Psalm 37:3-4)

This verse stumped me for over a year of my Christian life. At first glance, I interpreted it to read: "Read your Bible and God will bless your life with things you ask for."

See the problem? Me neither. But there was one. A big one.

The "delight" I read was based on a work oriented definition.

The "delight" the Psalmist is intended is a condition oriented definition.

The Hebrew definition of DELIGHT isto be of dainty habit, be pampered; to be happy about, take exquisite delight; to make merry over, make sport of.

World official rocked.

This whole time I was shaping my life after a product I was expecting to get at the end of this life. God was purging to the surface my heart of immaturity and selfishness, scraping it off, and showing me my delight is not in what I can or cannot do, but rather who HE is.

When my delight shifts, my desires shift.

When my delight is in myself and my accomplishments, my desires are for myself and accomplishment.

When my delight is in God almighty, the One who sees me where I am, my desires are for His will, His Kingdom, His delight.

Now, to get the record straight, I am not a pro at this. I still have fits of selfishness daily more often than I'd like to admit. But I see now where I should be headed. My eyes have been opened to a whole new world of freedom.

I am learning to make a dainty habit loving my God.
