Vice-Presidential Candidates Spar in First and Only Debate

Mike Pence seemed to walk away from the vice presidential debate coming across as the calmer candidate, despite both Pence and Time Kaine interrupting one another in the debate Tuesday night.
The interruptions began when Pence, then GOP vice presidential nominee, was asked about a New York Times report that claimed Donald Trump may have avoided paying taxes for some 20 years.
When Pence dodged the question, Kaine pushed back, and the two began to talk over one another.
Moderator Elaine Quijano said, “The people at home cannot understand either one of you when you speak over each other.”
Pence drew comparisons to Ronald Reagan, analysts said, with his “measured cadence, slightly smoky voice, perfect hair and bedrock conservatism.”
A CNN/ORC poll of debate viewers says that 48 percent of those who watched say Pence won the night.
Kaine, however, seemed more prepared than Trump had been for his presidential debate. According to USA Today, Kaine “rattled off a litany of Trump’s most controversial remarks and episodes.”
Kaine said Trump had shot “himself in the foot" by going after a Latina former Miss Universe; believing he is more knowledgeable than the generals about defeating ISIS; and thinking "the world will be safer if more nations have nuclear weapons."
Trump and Hilary Clinton face off in their second debate on Sunday at Washington University in St. Louis.
