Continue seeking Him [God] with seriousness. Unless He wanted you, you would not be wanting Him.
The end then of learning is to repair the ruins of our first parents by regaining to know God aright, and out of that knowledge to love Him, to imitate Him, to be like Him as we may the nearest, by possessing our souls of true virtue, which being united to the heavenly grace of faith, makes up the highest perfection.
Forming an unbreakable bond with God is the most important connection you can make in your life. God invites you to enjoy a relationship with Him. He pursues you. You also pursue him; we all do. In our deepest selves we have a recollection that we were created to be in relationship with the God who created us. As surely as an orphan seeks the love of his or her unknown mother and father, so we seek eternal love from God, our Father. "Our hearts are restless"1 and our hearts desire rest. We seek to know God, unknown to us yet not unknowable. He is nearer than our next breath. He is constantly seeking us yet not unknowable. He is nearer than our next breath. He is constantly seeking us, consistently desiring to give us knowledge of himself and fill us with his love. He is Love. He waits for you and seeks an entrance into your heart.
God is not like anything else or anyone else who promises you love yet leaves you empty. Love does not abandon children. Love does not forsake his lover. If we are adults and we do not know God, it is because we have lost our way to him; he has not lost his way to us. We try to go our own way, hoping we will find the path back to Love. Yet we forget the way back to our true home: "For the desire for true good is planted by nature in the minds of men, only error leads them to stray towards false good."2 We do not realize it is his love we are ultimately seeking. Love wants the true good for the object of his love. Until we awaken to the love that he offers, we abandon and forsake our very selves.
God desires that none should be lost, not one soul to be left without knowing his love. We invite you to take the time to get to know God, to embrace this opportunity to form a real and lasting relationship with him. Although you may begin an intimate (personal) relationship with God today, your relationship does not form overnight but is formed over time, like other relationships. Engage with us in this process of perfecting (growing toward maturity) your relationship with him and healing the wounds and misperceptions you have of him. We wish to share with you eleven key stepping-stones that you can use as tools to direct you in knowing God, experiencing his love, and building your relationship with him.
As humans we are given the privilege of having a higher calling than the animals. We have the ability to live above our instincts. We have a conscience, and we can think abstractly. We have the ability to reason and make choices in complicated situations. We have souls and thus we have the ability to live for deeper purposes than feeding our physical bodies. In Scripture we read that God has created each of us with the intention that we become holy: "For the purpose of God for you is this: that you may be holy" (1 Thess. 4:3).3
Mother Teresa expressed that this higher calling is God's greatest gift to us: "Holiness is the greatest gift that God can give us because for that reason He created us…. Determine to be holy because He is holy." She continued: "If we learn to love, we learn to be holy."4 It is through learning what love is, connecting with the love our Creator has for us, and learning to love as he does in our own lives that we become holy. Connecting with your call to holiness connects you with the deepest purposes of your life. Since God's design and purpose for you is to be holy, you can freely invite him to work with you and within you as you grow more whole, more loving, and thus more holy.
We invite you to stop here for a moment and pray that God will reveal his love to you in the biggest way your heart can embrace. Ask God to work with you to create an inner safety so that you feel free to let go of your fear, so you can be flexible enough to enlarge your heart, so that you can embrace the endless supply of love he wants to give you.
Undivided heart for God. Cultivate unity within and direct yourself toward God and his purposes.
No fear. Perfect love casts out fear. Learn to approach God through his grace and let go of fear. Fear paralyzes us from moving forward, because fear has to do with punishment. Receive his forgiveness and love.
Be in an attitude of prayer, always. Prayer is your communication with God.
Read the Holy Scriptures, which God gave to us. They are love letters from him meant to enrich our lives by bringing truth to the innermost parts.
Enlarge your heart. Expand the territory of your heart so love has room to make its home.
Ask God to lead you. When the Lord is your Shepherd, you shall not want.
Know the real God. Let go of projections, expectations, and myths.
Appoint a specific time to spend with God. Make time to cultivate your relationship with him. Find a local place of worship.
Build safe relationships with others. Each person is created in God's image.
Listen to God. Cultivate silence in your life. Consider the ways God speaks to you.
Eternal perspective. Cultivate this perspective to prioritize what really matters.
Working through each of the eleven steps will help you build an unbreakable bond with God.
