Devotionals Daily: A Year with Jesus

From Go for the Green by Jeff Hopper

MOTIVATED

All a man’s ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the Lord.

--Proverbs 16:2 NIV

We avid golfers are good at planning our days to include golf. We are even better at making it look as though this is doing everyone around us some good. You know, getting out of the house, into the great outdoors, and all that.

It turns out that most of what we do in life is for our own preservation or participation. Not only would it be strange for us to arrange matters to our disadvantage; most of the time it would seem plain stupid.

But Peter went to the Gentiles and Paul to Jerusalem. They went because God called them to set aside their own agendas and do as He laid out for them. It was hard, but two truths compelled them: First, God knew their true motives. Second, Christ had gone before them, to the cross, in the act of self-sacrifice that made their self-serving motives incidental.
