The Journey with Ron Moore

VITAL SIGNS: Unity is founded in the message of the Cross | 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 | Devotional

1 Corinthians 2:1-5
When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power.

The Corinthian believers were more about style than substance. They lived in a Vegas-like environment. The glittering lights still flickered in the darkness when they closed their eyes to pray. The church was messy with immorality, confused with disunity, and unfocused with conflicting messages. They pursued the men who mentioned Jesus in their talks rather than follow the Lord himself. Paul wrote to confront such dangerous errors.

Paul reminded the believers that he did not first come to them with articulate speech or advanced intellect. He came with a singular focus, that was of such impact that it brought on fear and trembling. He did not try to manipulate with words. Instead, clearly and simply he told about the Savior who died on the cross for sins and was raised to life by the God’s power.

That’s the clarity of focus we need today. In our culture, anything packaged attractively and marketed effectively gets attention and gains followers. But we can never forget that the most attractive “package” is sealed with the blood of Jesus, and the most effective “marketing” is sharing His good news story with all the people in our lives. Never let the Light of the world be reduced in the artificial lights of this world. Keep His message clear and focused as you share it and as you live it.

Father, help me clearly present the message of Jesus with my mouth and with my life. Don’t let the artificial lights of this world weaken the brilliance of the Light of the world in my life. Help me to share nothing more and nothing less than Jesus Christ and the power of His work on the cross. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
