VITAL SIGNS: God Desires Unity | 1 Corinthians 1:1-3 | Devotional

1 Corinthians 1:1-3 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ-- their Lord and ours: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

It’s the first thing they check. With no time to lose, working with both care and urgency, the medical professionals attending to the stricken patient get a read on the vital signs. According to one online medical encyclopedia, "vital signs show an individual is alive. They include heartbeat, breathing rate, temperature, and blood pressure."Only when the vital signs are stable can other needs be addressed.

Paul wrote his first letter to the Corinthians to address the vital signs of the church—the Body of Christ. The recipients of his letter lived and worked in the chief city of Greece. Corinth was a thriving city with a strong economy, rich culture, and an eclectic religious heritage (the city contained twelve temples). But there were problems. Like any large commercial city, one did not need to look far to find unbridled immorality. Although the church is made up of those who are “sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy,” many in the Corinthian church were immersed in rather than separated from the culture. So Paul wrote to address the vital signs.

We will address the vital signs of unity, Christian freedom, and worship in this series. These are the indicators of a living vibrant church. Our purpose is not simply to consider the Corinthian church. We desire to use this letter as God’s inerrant instrument to check the vital signs of your local church.

Father, we pray your blessings on this study. Use it to evaluate the health of our church. As you teach us, may we respond in humility and obedience. May our study and the application of it bring glory, honor, and praise to you. In Jesus Name, Amen.
