In Touch Daily Devotional
by Dr. Charles Stanley

May 26 & 27, 2007 – Daniel: Forward by Faith – Daniel 6

Welcome to the In Touch Devotional.

When we read the book of Daniel, it’s best to look at the “big picture.” The various events and reactions should be interpreted as parts of a single story about Daniel’s great trust. By the time he was cast into the lion’s den, the prophet had come so far in his faith journey that his situation didn’t intimidate him.

The roots of Daniel’s unshakable faith began with his parents. They certainly must have shared and interpreted Bible stories to him. Daniel also witnessed the fulfillment of Jeremiah’s prophecies about the fall of Jerusalem. From these experiences, Daniel learned how God keeps His promises. He understood that God responded faithfully to those who obeyed, and disciplined those who don’t.

When the time came for the young Hebrew to exercise faith, he already knew what he would do. He chose to obey God regardless of the consequences. As Exodus 34:15 tells us, Daniel decided not to eat the king’s food. The food violated Scripture because it had been offered to idols. God guided Daniel safely through that difficult experience and many other risky situations. Each time, the prophet determined to obey God and released his doubts. He withstood Satan’s challenge. And, ultimately, he gave glory to the Lord.

Daniel consistently moved forward by faith until his commitment to God’s way became unshakable. Our faith is no different. It grows as we take one obedient step after another. Then, we witness God’s reliability. We’ll see how He answers prayer. And we’ll increasingly depend on Him until we have a strong personal history of His trustworthiness.
