Pride. Pride kept Sodom from strengthening the hand of the poor and needy (Ezekiel 16:49).
When we think in terms of what the scriptures say about giving, we will focus on what God gave for us and to us; we will not focus on what we can get by giving. Our focus on giving to get leaves out Jesus and degrades the principle of giving to a "give and get syndrome."
The world says "We must keep, amass, and continually acquire in order to gain." The Word says Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again (Luke 6:38). Do not look at this scripture just in terms of money, look at it also in terms of love, time, wisdom, and the other intangibles in life.
There are many Christians who tithe faithfully and stay broke at the same time. They stay broke because balance is missing in their lives. The Word of God must be read as a whole and not picked apart to be used piece by piece when we deem it convenient. For instance, we can give all that we have but if we harbor bitterness, what good is the giving? (I Corinthians 13:3)
