August 25-26, 2007 – Prayer Changes Things Psalm 145:18-21

When Dr. Stanley was growing up, he and his mother moved quite a few times. Wherever they lived, she hung a plaque near the door. The background was blue, and inscribed on it were the words, “Prayer changes things.” Dr. Stanley knows she believed the truth of that statement, because she spent a lot of time talking with the Lord.

When God hears our prayers, He's certain to respond if our request is in His will. No matter how noble our cause or intent, we cannot change the Lord’s mind or cause Him to act outside of His plan. Sometimes we may want something that God won’t provide. But if we’re serious about desiring His best for our lives, He’ll do something even better than what we requested. And He will change our hearts accordingly.

A primary purpose of prayer is to discover God's will. As we seek His way, He works in our hearts and minds to develop our understanding of the situation. He guides us to a resolution. Then, our eyes will be opened to His point of view so we can pray appropriately. And when we ask for His will in His timing, we’ll find we make an impact on the world around us.

Prayer is a powerful tool. We see unbelievers saved, the sick healed, and evil defeated. The Lord changes things through prayer every day. We have an opportunity to participate in His work just by doing something we should do anyway, by talking to Him. Our impact is dependent upon how willing we are to spend time seeking God’s will and praying accordingly.
