The sister of Andrew Bunson, the American missionary who is being held in jail in Turkey, is continuing to trust that God will help her brother through this ordeal.
Brunson and his wife, Norine, were taken into custody in October 2016. Norine was later released, but Brunson remains imprisoned on charges his supporters say are false. He has been accused of having ties to the U.S.-based Muslim cleric who is blamed for Turkey’s failed coup last July.
Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has cracked down hard on all who were allegedly involved in the coup.
Brunson and his family and supporters maintain that he had nothing to do with the coup and was in Turkey doing missionary work and running a small church in Izmir..
Brunson’s sister, Beth Hartman, remains hopeful despite the trials her brother is facing.
“It's been very hard on us as his family. We love him and we want him to be back with his family,” she said, but added, “We have a strong faith in God. “We believe God is with him and he'll make it through this.”
Last week, Brunson pleaded with President Trump and the U.S. government to advocate on his behalf.
“I plead with my government – with the Trump Administration – to fight for me,” he said.
“Will the Turkish government face no consequence for stubbornly continuing to hold an American citizen as a political prisoner? Even though I have a long public track record as a church pastor, they falsely accuse me of being a member of an Islamist terrorist group.”
