Ignite! | Proverbs 17:17 | Devotional

Proverbs 17:17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Real friendship is not conditional. It is not based on give and take, but give and give. There are times when love is difficult. There are times when actions make acceptance hard. But a friend loves at all times. A true friend is a safe harbor; a comforting hiding place.

Loving at all times, however, does not mean rubber stamp approval. Neither does love mean that one should turn a blind eye toward sin. Just a real love is demonstrated when a parent rescues a child from playing near a dangerous road; so real love does not simply stand by when a person plays near or in a dangerous lifestyle. The most loving thing we can do is confront sin.

Another Proverb says it this way:

Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses (Proverbs 27:6).

A good friend is honest enough to point out flaws and blind spots even when it hurts. And a real friend is wise enough to listen, learn, and change.
