Give Me a Drink

"Give Me a drink."

Jesus said that. He was thirsty after walking on a very long journey during the heat of the day. Around noon, He came to a well in a town named Sychar. Jacob's well was located in that ancient place. Tired and hot, Jesus sat down by that well. Soon, a woman came to that same well. Seeing that she was drawing water, He asked her if she would give Him a drink. This happened in an area known as Samaria—a region where Jews seldom went. She was shocked that He would even speak to her. This led to a dialogue that was so significant, John recorded it in the fourth gospel account, the one that bears his name—John 4:1–30.

Take the time to read these verses slowly and thoughtfully. Picture them in your mind. Pay attention to three things:

  • His words to her, especially those in verses 10 and 13–14.
  • Her words to Him, as she tries to understand who He is.
  • Her words to others, as she later tells them about Him.
  • Finally, take the time to answer these two questions:

  • What did Jesus mean when He told the woman, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst"?
  • What are the differences between the kind of water we drink and the kind of water Jesus gives?
  • As essential as water is to our well-being, it does not permanently quench our thirst. We will always want and need more—a lot more. But the water Jesus offers not only brings momentary satisfaction, it brings satisfaction forever.

Maybe it's time for you to say to Jesus what He said to that woman: give me a drink.
