Read Galatians 4:21
Tell me, you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of what the law says?
What did the law say? Why would anyone want to return to it?
Have you ever said yes to something, not fully understanding what you were getting yourself into? As you discover more you start to wonder what in the world you were thinking even getting involved. The truth is, you didn’t really know what you were signing up for.
Gentile believers, or non-Jewish believers, may have fit into that category. They may not have been totally aware of what the law says. They didn’t grow up Jewish. For Jews, the law was a way of life since the day they were born. But for Gentiles, the law would have been foreign to them.
If they really understood what the law was and it’s true purpose, maybe they wouldn’t have been so open to embracing it along with their new found faith in Christ.
The Jews, however, knew full well what the law was about. They should have been rejoicing to now be walking in the freedom that Jesus Christ offers. And yet, Judaizers were still trying to convince the Gentiles to convert to Judaism. They were saying that all Christians are still under the law. But that is false teaching.
Paul reminded them in Galatians 4:21-26 that choosing to be under the law is choosing to be under slavery! Surely they wouldn’t choose this existence if they knew what the law said, right? The law exposed their sin and declared that they are sinners who deserved to die. The law gave them a long list of rules and rituals to follow but no matter how hard they tried they would never be good enough to fulfill them all.
The endless pursuit of trying to be good enough to obey the law would only point them to their need of a Savior. The law wasn’t saving anyone. And it still isn’t saving anyone today.
Friends, Jesus fulfilled the law. He said so Himself in Matthew 5:17-18, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.”
Jesus fulfilled the law perfectly and completely. He was the perfect sacrifice that we could never be. He died in our place and paid the punishment the law required. In Jesus, we find our freedom because the penalty was paid in full. Finished. Don’t get involved with false teaching. Be aware of what God’s Word says so that you know exactly what you are signing up for.
If you sign up for the law, you sign up for slavery and death. If you sign up for Jesus, you sign up for freedom and life.
Jesus, I choose You. I am choosing the life and liberty that I can claim because I am a child of God. Thank You for fulfilling the law on my behalf. Amen.
