Mature in Christ
Read Colossians 1:27-28
To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.
What is the role of the church in the lives of believers?
Think back to when you first became a believer in Christ and compare that with where you are right now. How have you changed? How have you grown in your understanding of who Jesus is and what He has done for you?
I know that I am not the same person I was when I first accepted Christ. My understanding of the Gospel, the doctrines of the church, and my understanding of the Scriptures have grown immensely. First, I attribute that growth to the work of the Holy Spirit in my life. He has changed me from the inside out.
But I would be remiss not to consider and be grateful for the people that God has chosen to work through in my faith journey. Over the years, God has placed pastors, professors, friends, and family in my life to proclaim Christ to me, to warn me about sin and its consequences, and to teach me wisdom. I owe my (still growing) maturity in Christ to everyone who has been faithful to do what God has commanded them to do—preach and teach the Word of God.
The church is called to equip the saints. Jesus didn’t say “go and make converts”. He said to make disciples. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20). To be a disciple is to be a learner. In order to be a learner, we need teachers. It is the church's job to teach the Word of God to the saints so that they learn, grow and are equipped to be sent out to do the same.
Friends, we are called to make disciples and to work to present everyone mature in Christ. If you are a new believer, I encourage you to seek the discipleship of a more mature believer who can walk alongside you and help you grow in your knowledge and understanding of your Christian faith. If you are a more mature believer, is there someone in your life that you are feeling led to disciple?
God, thank You for the people that You have placed in my life who have helped me to grow up in my faith and become more like Christ. I want to be a disciple of Christ, a life-long learner and follower of His teachings. Help me continue to grow and show me how I can help grow the faith of those around me. Amen.
