"Beautiful" an Enjoyable Listen With Great Message

Artist:  Tammy Trent
Title:  "I See Beautiful"
Label:  September Day Records

Life is rarely what we expect it to be. If life turned out as we planned, we wouldn't have Murphy's Law or the hundreds of clichés relating to our disappointment and/or getting what we didn't expect. Many of these sayings try to spin these potentially dismal circumstances into a positive outcome.

One might wonder, though, how we can maintain a optimistic view of life when we're trapped in a frustrating situation or set of circumstances. Reading through the stories of those who have managed to do this in the past, however, it seems clear that it's the result of a literal and intention decision.

Tammy Trent understands that this choice isn't an easy one to make, much less follow through on in life. But although she's undergone a number of setbacks and tough trials in life, she's back with her long-awaited new release, "I See Beautiful." The title track for the album speaks of this choice as a reaction to rain that may fall into our lives. attempting to spoil the day for us. "I'm Not Listening" echoes this message, expressing a refusal to listen to the negative influences around us. The rest of the album shares some difficult times with listeners ("Stop the World", "Rescue Me") or reminds listeners of the many reasons we each have to celebrate and be joyful - having others to pray with and for ("Pray"), forgiveness and redemption ("At the Foot of the Cross"), and the opportunity to experience new life in Christ ("Real Life").

The message isn't the only thing that expresses an enthusiasm for life on "I See Beautiful." The music itself seems to bubble over with joy as Trent indulges listeners with a poppy, light-hearted soundtrack to back her lyrics of hope and happiness. Whether it's the upbeat tracks such as "Real Life" and "Pray" or the ballads like "Rescue Me" the album feels more like something from the likes of early Stacie Orrico or Rachael Lampa than what you might expect from a seasoned industry vet. Unfortunately, the soulful aspect of Trent's vocals which have been evident in the past are glaringly omitted from this record, only hinted at briefly as the album leans more towards a dance sound.

Overall, "I See Beautiful" proves to be a mildly enjoyable listen with a great message that's geared towards those facing difficult times. The arrangements and styles seem a little dated, but will still likely reach out to the intended market. Fans of solid female vocals with a pop-laced backdrop will probably find themselves singing and dancing along with Tammy Trent's latest song of joy.
