Song of the Year
Expectation: Redeemer -- Nicole C. Mullen -- What's On It's Side? Nicole took this award home a few years back with her song On My Knees, recorded by Jaci Velasquez. Many of the songs on this year's list are great songs, but Redeemer has proven to be the heavy hitter on radio, at concerts and, most importantly, with the listener. What's Against It? Absolutely nothing. Who Else Has a Chance? Dive by Steven Curtis Chapman or He's My Son by Mark Shultz, but don't count on it.
Female Vocalist of the Year
Expectation: Jaci Velasquez -- What's On Her Side? This has once again been a huge year for Jaci with her Crystal Clear album and her very successful fall tour. Jaci is the only woman in the Artist of the Year category, not to mention, she's won the Female Vocalist category the last two years. What's Against Her? Her acceptance speech last year was less than glowing. GMA voters can be pretty rough on those who do not mention God in their acceptance speech. Who Else Has a Chance? Nicole C. Mullen or Yolanda Adams.
Male Vocalist of the Year
Expectation: Steven Curtis Chapman -- What's On His Side? He wins everything. Steven is well-loved by this industry for his heart and his music. What's Against Him? GMA voters may be growing weary of stroking his ego. He's won 50+ Doves in his 10+ year career. Also, his adoption agenda at last year's awards was a bit nauseating. Who Else Has a Chance? Fernando Ortega or Michael W. Smith
Group of the Year
Expectation: Third Day -- What's On Their Side? This has been Third Day's year. Their worship album, Offerings was huge on radio and in retail. Their tour has sold very well all year long. They have found their strength in the worship genre and all ages respond to their music. What's Against Them? P.O.D. Who Else Has a Chance? P.O.D. or Avalon, but even though radio and retail seem to love Avalon, GMA has not been kind to the group since they took home New Artist of the Year.
New Artist of the Year
Expectation: Plus One -- What's On Their Side? They sold 19,000 albums in their first week of release. Their album has just been certified Gold. They are already headlining a very successful tour. This boy band has it all and should not lose. What's Against Them? The boy band stereotype. Also, the "teen factor." With three teen-focused nominees in this year's category, there is a chance that every vote cast for Rachael Lampa and Stacie Orrico is not necessarily a vote for them, but a vote against Plus One, which leaves the door wide open for Mary Mary or Mark Shultz. Who Else Has a Chance? Mary Mary or Mark Shultz.
Artist of the Year
Expectation: Third Day -- What's On Their Side? Strong sales combined with general love for this band is sure way to win Artist of the Year. It seems like GMA is dying to award Third Day, but it never has had the right project to do so. Well, Offerings could very well be that project. What's Against Them? Steven Curtis Chapman and Michael W. Smith Who Else Has a Chance? I'm pulling for Jaci Velasquez -- it's been a very long time since we have seen a woman take this award home and I think she deserves it.
