The Journey with Ron Moore

Ziklag: Worn Out by Obedience | 1 Samuel 25:1 | Devotional

1 Samuel 25:1 Now Samuel died, and all Israel assembled and mourned for him; and they buried him at his home in Ramah. Then David moved down into the Desert of Maon.

David would never forget the day Samuel came to him in Bethlehem. When the old prophet saw David, the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; he is the one.” Samuel poured oil on David’s head and named him God’s choice to replace Saul as the next king of Israel. “From that day on the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power.”

Things started out well for David. First, there was victory over the giant, Goliath. Then David’s success on the battlefield landed him a “high rank in the army.” Songs were written about his feats. David quickly rose to rock star status. But Saul was not ready for the competition. Twice he tried to kill him. For ten years David ran for his life.

That was a confusing time for David. Had he not been anointed by Samuel? Wasn’t his new path confirmed by the killing of Goliath and success on the battlefield? Why did God have him on the run from a jealous Saul? We will find that, even amidst the questions, God was not wasting David’s time. We will also find in the days and weeks ahead, that even amidst your questions, God is not wasting yours.

Lord, you never waste our time. Remind us of that today. Even when we don’t understand what you are doing, help us to trust you. Thank you for preparing us today for what you have for us tomorrow. In Jesus name. Amen.
