I feared the people and obeyed their voice (1 Sam. 15:24). Saul confessed that he was worried about what other people thought of him and what other people would say about him. As a result, he made a horrible decision.

While we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Rom. 5:8). Our justification is based on what He has done, not on what we have done. And the result is peace.

O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee? (Daniel 6:20). There is scarcely anything we so much lose sight of as the fact that God is the living God; that He is now whatever He was three or four thousand years since; that He has the same sovereign power, the same saving love.

And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son (1 John 5:11). While death is sure and life is so brief, God gives you this life as an opportunity to prepare for the future because everyone will live forever somewhere.

I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed them (Hosea 11:4). God has a lot of experience when it comes to drawing back runaways.

For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell (Phil. 1:21-22). I didn't say I want you to plug God into your agenda. Lots of people have tried to do that. That’s a bad plan.

Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise (1 Cor. 3:18). When was the last time you made a fool of yourself for Christ’s sake?

Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure (Titus 1:15). Even in an unbelieving society, people can, as individuals, follow Jesus.

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised (Proverbs 31:30). We live in a competitive world. The pressures to be thin, beautiful, fit, smart, sexy, funny, rich, and popular trap us in a relentless vise grip.

Our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin (Rom. 6:6). This is attention-grabbing language to be sure, but what does Paul mean by it?

...the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe (Eph. 1:19). Don't be deceived. You are not under Satan's power or subject to his authority.

Thy love is better than wine (Song 1:2). Nothing gives the believer so much joy as fellowship with Christ.

...the iniquity of the holy things... (Ex. 28:38). While Jesus bears our sin, He presents before His Father's face not our unholiness, but his own holiness.

Give us this day our daily bread (Matt. 6:11). How often do I ask for my daily bread? I guess a better question might be: what exactly is "our daily bread?"

Without shedding of blood is no remission (Heb. 9:22). If we decide to be the best we can be, then we need to accept the fact that there is some sacrifice required.

We which have believed do enter into rest (Heb. 4:3). O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

I will make them to lie down safely (Hosea 2:18). This rest will be a safe one. It is one thing to lie down but quite another "to lie down safely."

"… I being in the way, the Lord led me…" (Gen. 24: 27). It is easier to steer a moving vehicle than one that is stationary.

Let the peoples renew their strength (Isa. 41:1). All things on earth need to be renewed. No created thing continues by itself.

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Rom. 12:2). Do not cling to old ways as you step into a new year.
