Power Demonstrated

1 Corinthians 2:4-5 (NIV®)

My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.

Paul says something that is counterintuitive to a preacher like me: his preaching was not with “wise and persuasive words.” I spend a lot of time speaking to people, and I don’t particularly want to sound dumb when I do. But there has to be an agenda, an objective beyond appearing to be wise, or even being persuasive. Paul said, “I want to demonstrate the power of God.” If God is doing something through you, it’s not because of your intellect or your clever conversation. It’s because you believe something remarkable happened for you at the cross. And to the degree that you are willing to believe that, you will benefit from the power of God at work on your behalf. Every blessing that is attached to being a Christ-follower extends from the power demonstrated in the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus. That’s remarkable.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, I want to demonstrate Your power to a watching world. I pray that the Holy Spirit would completely cover my words and overtake any agenda I might have other than the power of the cross. I present myself a living sacrifice to Your purposes that Your Kingdom might be established in the earth. In the powerful name of Jesus, amen.
