An American citizen has been killed fighting ISIS in Syria.

Keith Broomfield, 36, had travelled to Syria to fight alongside Kurdish forces about four months ago, NBC News reports. He was killed in the countryside outside Kobani.

His mother, Donna, said Broomfield felt that God was calling him to fight ISIS.

"He turned his life over to the Lord and he decided this was God's will and God wanted him to do it," Donna Broomfield said.

Broomfield’s sister posted a text message from her brother on Facebook that explained his decision.

He wrote, "I'm gonna do what I got to do. Sometimes you got to be a man whether you want to or not. I don't expect anyone to understand but I don't need anyone to either.”

At the same time, President Obama has made the announcement that 450 more troops will be deployed to Iraq to train local forces. This will bring the number of troops in Iraq to about 3,550, according to USA Today
