Children of Light

Read Ephesians 5:8-14 (ESV)

For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

What characterizes the lives of those living “as children of light”?

Chances are you’ve heard the phrase: “Nothing good ever happens after midnight.” It’s commonly used by parents to enforce curfews for their teenagers. But, as a general principle, there is some truth in it. Darkness provides the cover and privacy that those who want to engage in sin are looking for. Spiritually, Paul says to stay out of the darkness and away from the deeds that the darkness tries to hide.

What’s interesting is that Paul says, “at one time you were darkness.” Before Christ, we weren’t just misbehaving in the dark, we were the dark. Meaning, nothing good ever happened in us before we knew Jesus. Just as Paul said we were dead in our sins, we were also darkness.

But now. Now, Paul says “you are light in the Lord.” In Christ, we are light. In John 8:12, Jesus says: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” As followers of Jesus, we have His light. As the light of Christ shines on us, it shines through us as well when we walk in it and share that light with those around us.

Paul says that if we walk in His light, we live a lifestyle that reflects His goodness, righteousness, and truth. Instead of living a life that makes us try to hide from Him in the shadows, we are living in His light, fully exposed, seeking to please Him.

If we are light, we can’t also be dark. If we are alive, we can’t still be dead. Light/dark and dead/alive are complete opposites. Therefore, as light in Christ, we should take no part of the acts of darkness and instead our light should expose the deeds done in the darkness around us. How are you shining the light of Christ into a dark world? Is there any darkness around you that you need to expose and oppose?

Father, I want to live and walk in Your light. Help me to stay out of the darkness. Give me the courage to reveal the evil around me and take a stand against it. Amen.
