Engage the Light

Read Psalm 119:129-136

“Your testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul keeps them. The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple. I open my mouth and pant, because I long for your commandments. Turn to me and be gracious to me, as is your way with those who love your name.  Keep steady my steps according to your promise, and let no iniquity get dominion over me. Redeem me from man's oppression, that I may keep your precepts. Make your face shine upon your servant, and teach me your statutes. My eyes shed streams of tears, because people do not keep your law.”

Reflect

How does God’s Word shine light into our lives? How has the Bible changed your thinking and led you into truth?

As we draw into Scripture, God’s message takes hold of our minds and our emotions and occupies our souls. Yet inevitably, our stubborn human wills push us into a conflict with the Holy Spirit. We interlock with Him and wrestle with a hard concept or a command … usually feeling the sting of a guilty conscience:

How can I forgive and turn the other cheek after what they did to me?

Be holy as You are holy? Lord, You know my secrets and the things that hold me back. I’m not even sure if I’m cut out to be a Christ-follower.

What do You mean “there’s a log in my eye”?

Ultimately God wins! Getting entangled with truth untangles sin. And if we surrender control to Christ, our wills begin to mesh with His. We pledge ourselves to a new way of relating to others, and we come into agreement with God. Our faith is once again active. Finally, we’re moving and growing—often in unexpected ways!

Engaging God’s Word is the process of learning how to think and love biblically.

Pray

Lord, untangle sin in my life. Change my thinking, renew my heart. Amen.
