Literary Types

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

With its 66 individual books, the Bible is sometimes referred to as a library. God used six different literary types in His love letter to us:

Narratives describe the accounts of events.

Parables are short stories that illustrate truth.

Poetry utilizes symbols and figures of speech to paint vivid pictures of the attributes of God and our response.

Prophecy uses figures of speech as well to foretell the future.

Proverbs present practical principles for everyday life.

Epistle sare letters written to churches or individuals that present truth, address issues, and provide practical instruction.
