Seek the LORD

July 27

Read Psalm 34:4 (ESV)

I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.

What do you do when you are afraid?

When my kids were younger, it was not uncommon to be woken up by one of them in the night. Usually, they were afraid of something. A strange noise, the dark, weird shadows, a thunderstorm, or a bad dream often drove them to seek us out in the middle of the night. They knew that one of us would answer them, calm their fears, and help them fall back asleep.

In today’s verse, David was praising God for delivering him from his fears. David was on the run because his father-in-law, King Saul was pursuing him and trying to kill him. So he ran to King Achish, the King of Gath, looking for refuge, only to be afraid that he was also going to try to kill him! Interestingly, David resorted to pretending to be insane so King Achish would not harm him (1 Samuel 21:10-15).

But Psalm 34 gives us a glimpse into David’s heart through all of this. He was terrified for his very life. It seemed that no matter where he ran, someone was after him! He truly had nowhere to run to and nowhere to hide!

So he ran to the LORD. He cried out to him. He sought God and God answered him. In verse 6 David wrote, “This poor man called, and the LORD heard him; he saved him out of all of this troubles” (NIV).

Just as a young child runs to his parents when he is afraid, David ran to God. He had full confidence that even though men may betray him, God would be faithful to him. He just had to cry out to Him. “The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all of their troubles” (Psalm 34:17, NIV).

And he had to know Who to run to. Afterall, running to another human, even another king, had backfired. But David knew that the LORD was good. “Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him” (Psalm 34:8, NIV).

Friends, there is plenty in this life to be afraid of. So where can you run? Who can you ask for help? Who do you turn to when everyone else lets you down? David knew Who to seek when he was afraid. He sought the LORD. The LORD answered and He delivered. And David invited us to do the same. To “taste and see” God’s faithfulness for ourselves. When you are afraid, seek the LORD. “The LORD will rescue his servants; no one who takes refuge in him will be condemned” (Psalm 34:22, NIV).

LORD, sometimes, I am so afraid. I feel like I have no one to cry out to and no one who will help me. I have been let down by people before but You have not let me down. Please deliver me from my fears. I trust in You. Amen.
