Spiritual Rebirth

Read 1 Peter 1:3-5 (ESV)

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

What does it mean to be “born again”?

Do all Christians have to be “born again” and what does that mean exactly? Jesus answers that question in John 3:3-8 when He told Nicodemus that one cannot enter the kingdom of God “unless one is born of water and the Spirit.” It is clear that Jesus is not talking about being physically born again. No, this rebirth is a spiritual one.

In today’s verse, Peter wrote that by God’s great mercy, “he has caused us to be born again to a living hope.” When we were physically born, we were not born to live forever. Everything that is born in the flesh is perishing. Isaiah 40:6-7 says that “all flesh is grass, and all of its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades.” In our flesh, we are perishable. We live for a brief moment and then shrivel up and die.

But because Jesus rose from the dead and now lives, in Him we too can live. When we receive Christ, we are spiritually reborn and become children of God. As His children, we are also His heirs and the inheritance that we are able to claim is “imperishable, undefiled, and unfading.” What is this inheritance? It is our salvation.

In Ephesians 1:13-14 Paul explains: “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.”

We are saved into a living hope the moment that we receive Christ. But our salvation is not complete until Jesus returns. Until then, Paul said that we are “sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.” And in today’s verse, Peter says we are “being guarded” by God’s power.

Friend, if you have received Jesus Christ, you have been spiritually reborn. Because His Spirit lives in you, you can confidently place your hope and trust in His promise for your salvation. Nothing can take it away. Your inheritance is on reserve with your name on it. You are being guarded and kept by the Holy Spirit’s power. You cannot be lost!

God, You have given me so much hope! Because Your Spirit lives me in, I can confidently trust that I am saved and will inherit everlasting life. You are guarding and keeping me. Nothing can take this new life from me. Amen.
