There's An App For That: How Do I Find Direction? | Philippians 1:9-11

Philippians 1:9-11
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ-- to the glory and praise of God.

How Do I Find Direction? Pray for it!

If you are looking for a prayer to pray for your spouse, today’s passage is it. If you want a significant prayer to pray for your children, look to the top of this page. A prayer for yourself? Philippians 1:9-11 is it. Let’s break it down.

Paul prays that the Philippians love would run over as a river overflows its banks. But that love is not the warm and fuzzy affection heard in top-of-the-chart songs. It is to be knowledgeable (genuine spiritual understanding) and insightful (deep perception into the ways of God). This prayer has three purposes. The first is discernment (to test something in order to approve or disapprove). The second is purity (morally pure…literally—tested by the light of the sun). The third is blameless (not causing others to stumble).

Imagine what could happen if we consistently prayed this prayer for ourselves and others! Paul says the result would be a life “filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God!” Let’s start praying Philippians 1:9-11 right now.

Heavenly Father, may your love overflow in me today, producing a knowledge of spiritual things and a deep understanding of your ways. Lord, give me true discernment so I can test all the things that come into my life. Keep me morally pure. Please don’t let me cause others to stumble. Make me like a “container” filled with fruit of righteousness. May all I do bring glory and praise to you. In Jesus, name. Amen.
