Walk By The Spirit

Read Galatians 5:16-18

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

How have you experienced the inner conflict of your flesh and the Spirit?

Have you ever felt like you just can’t get it together? No matter how hard you try, you continue to fall back into your old ways. If that’s you, you are in good company. The apostle Paul expressed a similar struggle. In Romans 7:15 he lamented, “I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.”

It’s so frustrating to experience our flesh and the sin that is still in our hearts. While we are born again in Christ, we are still wrestling with the sinfulness of our flesh. It can be so discouraging. Before we were in Christ, our sin may not have bothered us at all. But now that we are in Christ, we feel conviction when we sin. Our sin nags at us. We are aware of it. We know we can’t just do whatever we want. And we should hate our sin because God certainly does. We just can’t overcome our sinfulness all on our own.

So what is the good news? If we are in Christ, we have the gift of the Holy Spirit. Before Jesus ascended into heaven in Acts 1:8, He said, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you…” We cannot overcome sin, and we cannot do the work that God has called us to do in our own strength. We need a Helper. We need to walk by the Spirit. We need His power!

In Romans 8:5, Paul said it this way, “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.” Those of us who are in Christ have the Holy Spirit living in us. But we have to choose to daily walk in the Spirit.

When we spend time in the Word, pray, and seek Him, we will be led by Him. Our minds will be filled with His Word, and our lifestyle choices and decisions will be guided by the Spirit. We will find that our desires become more and more like His the longer we walk with Him.

Friends, submit to the Holy Spirit today. Ask Him to lead you. Fill your mind with God’s Word. Let the power of the Holy Spirit go to work in your life to help you overcome your battle with the flesh.

Holy Spirit, I want my walk to be led by You. Guide my steps, make my desires more like Yours, and change my sinful heart. Give me the power to overcome my flesh and glorify You in everything I do. Amen.
