We Give Because He Gave
Read Matthew 2:9-11
After they had heard the King, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with His mother Mary, and they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.
How can you worship Christ today? What gifts can you bring to Him?
God doesn't need our gifts. He's God! Everything we have came from Him. He is perfect and complete. There isn't anything that He needs. So why did the Magi bring Him gifts? And gifts so impractical for a baby. I mean, what is a baby going to do with gold and fragrant incense?
Well, the gifts the wisemen brought reveal something about the recipient. Jesus may not have needed these gifts, but they show us that the Magi understood who Jesus is. They gave Jesus gold, a gift fit for a king. Incense is a gift given to God as a fragrant offering. The priests would burn a special blend of incense on the altar, which symbolized prayers rising to God. Myrrh was an ointment used in the embalming process.
The Magi knew that He is royalty, He is deity, and they knew that He was going to suffer and die. Jesus is our King, our God, and our Messiah. The wise men knew that Jesus was worthy of the expensive gifts and that He was worthy of their worship.
So why do we give gifts to Jesus if He doesn't have any need for them? Because our gifts show that we understand who He is. It shows that we know He is worthy of our worship, honor, and praise.
We also give to God because He first gave to us. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). Why did God give Jesus to us? Because He loved us. Why should we give gifts to Him? Because we love Him.
Friends, on this day of giving and receiving of gifts, let's not forget the reason why we give. We give to those we love because God loved us first and gave us Jesus. And while we are giving generously, let's not forget to give Jesus the gift of our worship. He is our King, He is our God, and He is our Messiah. He is worthy of our honor and praise. He doesn't need our gifts, but He surely deserves them.
God, thank You for the gift of Your Son Jesus! You gave Him to me though I did not deserve Him. All I can give is my worship and praise, which You definitely deserve. You are my King, my God, and my Savior! Amen.
