My Moment Of Awareness
My Father in heaven
has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being (Matthew 16:17, NLT).
As a young businessman in Hollywood, California, I was an agnostic. I was actually a "happy pagan" and offended by any discussion of the cross and the blood of Christ.
Such a gruesome thought seemed so distasteful to me, and my aesthetic nature rebelled at the idea. Then one day as I was studying the Scriptures in my search for God, He sovereignly opened my mind.
One passage which God used to get to my heart was Colossians 1:13-14: "For he has rescued us out of the darkness and gloom of Satan's kingdom and brought us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who bought our freedom with his blood and forgave us all our sins" (TLB).
Another passage was Hebrews 1:1-3: "Long ago God spoke in many different ways to our fathers through the prophets, in visions, dreams, and even face-to-face, telling them little by little about his plans. But now in these days he has spoken to us through his Son to whom he has given everything and through whom he made the world and everything there is. God's Son shines out with God's glory, and all that God's Son is and does marks him as God. He regulates the universe by the mighty power of his command. He is the one who died to cleanse us and clear our record of all sin, and then sat down in highest honor beside the great God of heaven" (TLB).
It was there that God revealed Himself to me. Suddenly I found myself on my knees, in tears, overwhelmed with a deep sense of awareness of who Christ really is, and gratitude that because of Christ's death on the cross and the shedding of His blood my sins were forever forgiven, cleansed, washed away.
Though I may sometimes do that which would grieve or quench the Spirit, that forgiveness is always there. I was assured. I could loose fellowship with God, but I would never loose my relationship with Him. I was forever perfect in His sight because of the cross and the shedding of the blood of Christ for my sins.
Today when I take communion
I find myself again and again in tears of gratitude to think that I, who am so unworthy, should be so privileged to have the absolute assurance of God's Word that all of my sins are forgiven and one day I shall spend eternity in the presence of the glorious, mighty, holy, creator God and Savior and worship Him for all eternity.
Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
