Devotionals Daily: A Year with Jesus

From One Year Devotional Prayer Book Volume II by Johnny Hunt

The only way to describe some interactions with our spouses, children, coworkers, and friends is grief! Agitating remarks are often the cause. And let’s be honest—our own comments and criticisms probably give them grief as well.

The power of the human tongue for good and evil is amazing.

The Bible says your tongue can bring grief not only to those in your sphere of influence, but also to God’s Spirit. God intends for you to minister grace, not grief. How do you do this? Consider the following things before you speak: Is it True? Is it Honest? Is it Important? Is it Necessary? Is it Kind? T-H-I-N-K before you speak and your words can bring grace, not grief.

God’s Spirit of truth enables you to speak truth in love to build up others in faith instead of tearing them down in criticism. You can bring others hope, not despair. THINK about your words. Are you the cause of grief in someone’s life? Your family? Your friends? God’s Spirit?

We grieve God’s Spirit when we ignore His redeeming and renewing work in us. The Spirit is the seal of our redemption. With His help, our words can be transformed from weapons that destroy into God’s instruments that minister grace. Thank God for the enabling and enduring ministry of the Spirit of truth!
