Devotionals Daily: A Year with Jesus

From In God We Still Trust by Richard G. Lee

Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him. - 2 John 9–10

Avoiding False Teachers

The apostle John warned of the danger of false teachers who deny the incarnation of God in Christ Jesus. Believers are to reach out and embrace others with Christian love, but that love must be discerning. We do not want to open the door to false teaching. In this letter to “the elect lady and her children” (v. 1), John insisted that they—and we—deny even the slightest assistance to itinerant teachers who promote an erroneous view of Christ.

The apostle would have concurred with Elias Boudinot, a Founding Father and president of the Continental Congress from 1782–1783, who said, “Good government generally begins in the family, and if the moral character of a people once degenerate, their political character must soon follow.” The principle is clear: If you allow a bit of evil into the home or heresy into the church, it will spread out into the world.

Patriot’s Prayer

Holy Spirit, guide my mind, protect my heart, and guard Your church from those who would teach a gospel other than Yours. Reveal to me whether or not a teacher is from You.

Patriot’s Promise

God’s Word will help us discern truth from falsehood: “[The Bereans] received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11).
