The Greatest Text Message | 1 John 1:1-4 | Devotional

1 John 1:1-4
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched-- this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete.

When the Apostle John was divinely inspired to declare Jesus as the Word, God made it clear that He desires to communicate His heart to us. “The life appeared; we have seen it,” John proclaims. And now what John and others saw they pass on to us so that the fellowship with God will continue. The Word of life spoke, and John wants to make sure that the Word continues to speak from generation to generation.

Indeed, the Word speaks. Through the Holy Spirit who resides in every believer, we are given guidance, counsel, conviction, exhortation, and encouragement. It is the Spirit that testifies with our spirit that we are indeed children of God (Romans 8:16).

I love A. W. Tozer's thoughts here. He writes:

I believe that much of our religious unbelief is due to a wrong conception of and a wrong feeling for the Scriptures. A silent God suddenly began to speak in a book and when the book was finished lapsed back into silence again forever. Now we read the book as the record of what God said when He was for a brief time in a speaking mood. With notions like that in our heads how can we believe? The facts are that God is not silent, has never been silent. It is the nature of God to speak. I think a new world will arise out of the religious mists when we approach our Bible with the idea that it is not only a book which was once spoken, but a book which is now speaking" (The Pursuit of God, p. 82).

Quiet your heart. Spread God's Word open before you. Listen. God continues to speak.
