Community: Challenges to Togetherness | Genesis 3:9-10

Genesis 3:9-10
But the LORD God called to the man, "Where are you?" He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid."

Before sin entered the world, it was all good. Adam and Eve were both naked and not in the least bit ashamed. That’s hard for us to imagine, isn’t it? Their outward exposure was a literal picture of inward disclosure. Body, mind, soul, and spirit…they hid nothing from each other.

But sin changed all that. Beginning in Genesis 3, the man’s body and soul nakedness caused him to be afraid of God…so he hid. Nakedness—inside and out—was something to be covered. And we have been hiding from God and each other ever since.

The cross is where Jesus hung exposed for us. On the cross the Savior took on our sins and paid for each one in full. His death was the payment that can end our hiding from God. Through the cross, Jesus puts us in vertical community with God and horizontal community with each other. Because of Jesus and his work on the cross, you can come out of hiding. Now that’s good news, isn’t it?!

Lord Jesus, thank you for taking our shame and replacing it with forgiveness, cleansing, and the confidence to approach the throne of the eternal God. We are eternally grateful! In your name we pray. Amen.
