February 6
Arrogant, overfed, and unconcerned
Linda Buxa

Sodom and Gomorrah live on in infamy. After all, when the Creator of the universe destroys your city with burning sulfur because your people are wicked, you must be really wicked. So wicked that, even thousands of years later, sins are still named after you.

Because I am prone to comparison, I used to become incredibly self-righteous when I read this story. Then one day a friend pointed out Ezekiel 16:49,50, where God tells Jerusalem, “Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.”

Oh. That’s not why I thought they were destroyed. Those cities were burned to the ground because they were arrogant, overfed, unconcerned, and didn’t help the needy—in addition to the other sins that I thought were the main reason.

If I am truly prone to comparison (and it’s not working in my favor at this point), I realize I am far more like Sodom and Gomorrah than I originally thought. Arrogant? Check. Overfed? Check. Unconcerned? Check.

Ezekiel’s words sound a warning that my personal comfort, status, and agenda are not a priority. In God’s world, Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all” (Mark 9:35).

Urgent goal for an urgent need!

Help reach a $116,000 goal by February 28 to reach a generation of young people who are disengaging from their faith . . . and are increasingly leaving the church.

And when you give today, we’ll send you the book More Than Enough to say thanks for helping share Jesus’ love with more young people. As you face circumstances in life that cause you to doubt and worry, the empowering truth from this book will remind you all over again of the greater reality that’s in your life. And that’s Jesus.
